Engine Notes - how to pipe data into it?

Is it possible to pipe a variable somehow into the Notes column for each smedgeEngine?
For instance, setting the note for an engine to $(IP) does not pipe the nodes IP address in even after setting "IP" as an environment variable. Or am I missing something?
