Autodesk changed the way they send output from 3D Studio Max 2016. If you see output from Max 2016 with one character per line, instead of normal lines of text, there is a fix:
This will be in Smedge 2015 Update 1 and later versions as well. If you notice any issues with characters displaying incorrectly in Max 2016 or later, please let me know.
