We met Sean Connery!(previous) up (next) Coming home...

Well... : 18 January 2005

As you may have noticed, our trip is winding down. We're sorry we haven't been updating the web page anymore, but how many people really want to hear about a daily routine of work and carrying groceries on the bus in Glasgow? Of course, we did actually do more than that, including trips to Ireland, London and Amsterdam. And our return to the States was an adventure all its own, with nearly 48 continuous hours awake...

Because of a dead computer, we can't put any more pictures online. We had actually gone and put together a whole batch from Scotland, including a trip we took up to the Highlands for a big family party (a keighlie, I think it's called), where everyone is expected to bring their own bottle of alcohol, and drink it. It was a great time, and we got to meet most of Patricia's family. None of them had a problem finishing their bottles off...

This wasn't our first trip with Pat and Patricia, though. In early November, we travelled down to the classic British resort town of Blackpool for a weekend of shows and fish & chips. That was an adventure. The shows were pretty fun, in their own way, and the people watching was classic. Pat's car got towed, which put kind of a damper on the evening, but we recovered eventually.

In November, we took one of the world's shortest international flights from Glasgow to Dublin, for about two weeks of hanging out in Ireland with our friends Jackie, Owen, and Paige. It was great to have "family" to hang out with for Thanksgiving. The dinner was delicious, and the company was wonderful. We even got to hang out with much of the rest of the Ryan clan in Dublin, and see some of the key sights (especially the Guiness brewery).

In mid December, we took a short break down to London. A few days in the busy capital reminded us of what it was like to be travelling again. We saw a bunch of the sights, and toured around the West End to some fun pubs and restaurants. I even got to show Andrea my old stomping grounds in north London, Wood Green, which hadn't changed much, except for the giant new cinema complex that I sure wish had been there back in the day.

From London, we took the Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel, an exciting new experience for Andrea, who slept the whole way. We continued by train all the way up to Amsterdam, where we hung out for another couple nights. That was another fun trip, and we both like the city a lot. It really is a beautiful place, and the people are all so tall.... We made friends with the girls in the windows, and had some excellent space tea in the local coffee house. We also saw the Van Gogh museum and a modern photography museum, had some excellent dinners and did some of our holiday shopping there. Thankfully, it's so much easier to drag a bunch of stuff back on a train than it is on an airplane.

On December 30, at about 4 in the morning, Glasgow time, we started our long journey back home. Both of us had colds, and neither of us slept, so we were in pretty feeble shape when we stopped in Los Angeles for a layover, and technically completed our circle of the Earth. Andrea couldn't hear anything (and we still had one more flight to go) and I thought I was going to throw up. Fun.

We only had a few hours there, and we were pretty wiped out, but we did get to see our parents who all came to meet us at the airport and complain about how long we were gone. It was wonderful to see them all, even for a short bit, and we're both looking forward to being back home officially so we can see them and everyone again, to share stories and photos, and catch up on the last year and a half.

In the mean time, we are in Kailua, at Andrea's sister's new house. It's nice to hang out with family again, and the kids are a blast. They can now both actually communicate a bit!

We hope everyone is well. We miss you all.
