Past and Future

25 years ago today was the first commercial release of Smedge. As we mark this milestone, we are deeply grateful to every studio, facility, team, and artist who has trusted us to keep their work moving forward. It has been an honor to help so many people.

Today, we are introducing sqi (like “sky”), an open source tool for managing creative workflows, designed for teams of any size. Whether you’re a few friends looking to cobble a couple workstations to render overnight or a large facility managing complex infrastructure, sqi scales to your needs.

You will be able to download and run it immediately on your own hardware, or build on top of it with your own database, configuration, and custom integrations. It’s built for flexibility: take what you need, extend what you want, and keep control of your data and infrastructure. sqi integrates with modern creative tools and brings faster feedback loops, smarter resource allocation, and deeper visibility into how work moves through your pipeline.

What comes next is collaborative. We’ve designed sqi with flexibility in mind, ready to grow alongside your pipeline and adapt to the ways you actually work. If you’re curious about how sqi might fit into your facility or want to learn more, we’d love to talk. Here’s to the next generation of production excellence!
