If I am rendering a Maya scene with Vray through Smedge do the Vray render slaves need to be open on each node or will Smedge and Maya access Vray in the background without having to do anything?

Normally, Smedge does the distribution for you, so you should not be using Vray in slave mode, and generally do not need to leave it running. Instead either use Maya with the Vray plugin renderer, or export from Maya to render with the Vray standalone renderer.
It is possible to configure "master/slave" type rendering even using Smedge. This may be useful for setting up single frame renders or for fitting into an existing pipeline. The idea would be that you would use Smedge to control the "master" and start the rendering process, and the "slaves" would all be set up just as if you were doing it manually or through the UI.
If you do go this route, be sure to disable Smedge processing on the "slave" nodes, or you will end up overloading the machine, slowing down renders, and possibly causing stability issues.
Thanks,
