The next version of Smedge is now available for all platforms. We strongly recommend updating as soon as possible, because this version is such a major performance and reliability improvement over all previous versions. Links are available in the download page:

You may have noticed the skipped year. We didn't skip it because of superstition about the number 13. Rather, we spent most of the last year doing nothing but fixing every little hang, crash and leak in the code. Performance was improved by nearly two orders of magnitude, memory usage cut in half, and scalability has been proven in production with the beta versions on over 1,000 nodes.

The big changes that you will notice right away:

  • The GUI has a new and improved look without all the flashing. The lists, the output, and especially the history are easier to see and use, while making even more information available to you.

  • New Automatic Engine Mode optimizes your performance based on usage to allow enterprise type scaling and performance without any specialized training

  • There is a new Job Graph view available that gives you an easy to read histogram view of your work, to get a better sense of how jobs are running.

  • Smedge can now do Partial Job Waiting allowing frames from the waiting job to start rendering as soon as the waited-for job has finished those frames, even if the latter still has more work to do.

  • Dedicate multiple redundant masters now, by specifying more than one machine in the Configure Connection dialog box.

  • In the spirit of the original Smedge 1 and 2 versions, Smedge now runs on up to 3 machines with no license installed.

  • Support for even more renderers, including Indigo and Thea.

Of course, there is so much more. Check out all of the changes in the What's New manual.
