This new version is the most stable Smedge yet. It also includes some new products, which are not fully tested (thus it is "beta" not for stability of the program itself, but just for these new products).
Smedge 2011 Update 1 adds:
Maya Single Frame Rendering
This allows you to divide up a single frame across multiple machines using any of the Maya plug-in renderers that support region rendering by command line. This currently includes Maya Software Renderer, mental ray for Maya, RenderMan for Maya, V-Ray for Maya, 3Delight for Maya, all of which now have a matching "Single Frame" product to generate the renders.
3Delight for Maya
Direct support for controlling 3Delight for Maya both for plug-in rendering and for exporting to 3Delight standalone
Modo
Support to render Modo scenes across a farm. This is useful for rendering sequences (Modo has a built-in network rendering system for rendering single frames on multiple machines). Currently this uses Modo's "headless" mode and sends commands via the input stream. You can add your own custom commands after the scene is loaded and prepared and before the actual render begins.
Improvements to the Engine command line shell
Now it can download files from an Engine given the shared file ID (like the Served Log shown in the history). It also now lists all possible information about an Engine when listing Engines. Finally, it is now possible to run the Engine as a service/daemon on Mac and Linux like how it can be run on Windows. (Note that the supporting scripts to install and control the service are not yet complete on these platforms.)
File and Dir sub-parameters are now translated
If you create a parameter that is a secondary list of parameters, now any sub-parameters that are either a file or a folder are run through the path translation system independently of the rest of the parameter value. This is most useful when using the "Render Overrides" parameter many Products provide to override the output folder. Now that folder path will be translated even though it is embedded with a bunch of other parameters that are not translated.
Support for Maya 2012 image name detection
In Maya 2012, the mental ray renderer changed the way that it outputs the rendered image filename. This change broke the way Smedge was looking for the filename. This did not affect rendering, but did stop Smedge from being able to view the images or image sequences. It has been corrected and tested to work with both the new and the old versions.
Bug fixes:
Changing a job would cause finished work to get requeued
This was a bug introduced in Smedge 2011 and has been corrected.
3DS Max did not expand all variables in the command line it generates
Now all parameters are fully expanded with any $(Name) variables substituted correctly.
InfoStream memory display could get weird results if the amount of virtual memory changed
The new info display system could show some strange numbers for the available memory on a machine if that machine changed the size of its virtual memory files while Smedge was running. This is now accounted for correctly so the memory display should be consistent no matter what the machine does.
On Linux, command line parameters were not always parsed correctly
This applied only to Linux and only when running the command line tools through the startup scripts (which is what most people do). The script would incorrectly pass its command line on to the binary executable. This is now corrected to allow even complicated parameters with special characters to be correctly passed to the binary executable.
