I would like Smedge to hide to the system tray (Windows) or Menu Bar (Mac OS X) upon minimize.

Having growl/toast notifications display on job finish/engine failures would be nice, too.

On Windows, you can use Herald in the system tray, and then just close the GUI window (make sure to leave the engine and master running). This will have the same basic effect as hiding to the system tray. On Mac, you can do something similar, but currently the Herald icon shows in the Dock, not on the menu bar. (This is due to limitations in the current version of the cross-platform GUI library that Smedge uses. This will probably change in a future release of Smedge.)

Integration with Growl is possible, again easiest done using Herald as the glue. See this post for more information:

By the way, the script in the post is also included as a file in the Utilities folder of the Mac distribution of Smedge. Use the menu command System > Smedge Files > Browse the Utilities Folder.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you,

How much opened Smedge GUI affects overall network traffic and other resources? Is it necessary to instruct artists to close Smedge GUI as much as possible?

thanks

Having the GUI open does add some amount of network load to your system. Worse is having redundant masters open. If your artists want to leave the GUI open, they should at least configure it not to also have a redundant master running on their node. This will reduce network load and system load on the workstation. You can do this in the SmedgeGui options dialog box.

If you have a stable master or run a single master setup, you can set the default for all machines not to start the master with the GUI using the menu command System > Components > Set System Default Component Startup.

Thanks
