It's finally here!

The next version of Smedge is ready for you to test out on Windows and Mac. The Linux build will follow early this week.

This new version has significant changes in installation that should make it much easier to set up and run. The biggest change is that you no longer have to decide a machine's role when you install the program. With the new dynamic redundant masters, Smedge 3 now works similar to how Smedge 2 used to work. All you need to do to start Smedge on a machine is double click the big red S and it will take care of the rest for you.

Note that I am still working on updating the documentation. Specifically, the Installation Manual is still based around the separation of components and choosing the machine role at installation time. This information is still applicable: you can still configure Smedge components individually and install the Engine and Master processes to run as Services or daemons all the time. But using Smedge as a normal application is now easier, and has been changed to be the default mode of operation. Both Windows and Mac releases include helper scripts in the distribution Utilities folder that can be used to configure the services/daemons.

To run on Windows:

Download the new installer. Smedge now uses the Windows Installer system, which should be available on any version of Windows that Smedge runs on. You can download the installer here:

http://www.uberware.net/download/Smedge3-2.5.0b2.msi

After running the installer, all of the Smedge components should be installed on your system in the default 32 bit program folder. You can start Smedge with the shortcut in the start menu, on the desktop, or by starting the SmedgeGui.exe program file. The installer also includes a checkbox to start Smedge after installing it.

To run on Mac

Download the Mac Smedge application. Smedge is now bundled into a single executable file that you can simply drag to your /Applications folder, or run from any location on the system. The zip file is here:

http://www.uberware.net/download/Smedge3-2.5.0b2-Mac.zip

Expand the file after downloading the zip, if it is not automatically expanded by Safari or your web browser. Move the app wherever you want it to live. Double click to start the Smedge.

Questions or problems

If you need help getting Smedge running, or if you have any problems with the system, please contact . Please send the logs from your machine along with a description of the problem, and if possible, steps to reproduce it.

You can now browse to the logs from a command in SmedgeGui. Use the System > Smedge Files > Browse the Log Folder menu command. This will open a file system window with the SmedgeGui log files. Note that the SmedgeEngine and SmedgeMaster log files are stored nearby. From the SmedgeGui log folder, move up 2 folders, and you will find the logs for the other components.

You can download the Windows version as a zip file with the program components here:

http://www.uberware.net/download/Smedge3-2.5.0b2-Windows.zip

When running directly, you should start the SmedgeGui.exe component application to start Smedge on a node. Of course, if you are replacing Smedge 2.4 in a pipeline, it can still be installed and run as individual components.

If you have issues with missing libraries when you try to start Smedge, you need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) from the Microsoft web site. You can download that from Microsoft, or you can download it here:

Robin, something appears to be wrong with that ZIP file. I've tried it on two different computers with two different ZIP decoders and it just won't work.

IZArc will only extract or test one file, RLib.dll. If you open the archive it will see the rest of the files but fails to extract or test any of them. If you do a test at any point it will see only RLib.dll, which will fail.

7-Zip won't extract anything, or even open the archive. When you test the file it says "Can not open file Smedge3-2.5.ob2-Win.zip as an archive."

Again, this is on two different machines with two different programs. I have downloaded the file multiple time to see if I just didn't get it all somehow. I think the ZIP is messed up.

It seems that there was some bizarre corruption on my server that would not allow the file to be downloaded correctly. It seems that the corruption hit some kind of server cache, and got stuck there. To work around it, I have renamed the zip file, and it should download correctly with the new name. I corrected my post above with the name:

http://www.uberware.net/download/Smedge3-2.5.0b2-Windows.zip

(Note that the "Win" became "Windows"). The MSI file has been downloaded and successfully installed on 32 bit Windows XP and 64 bit Windows Vista so far here.

If anyone continues to have problems with the files, please let me know.

Thanks
